The Volunteer Spotlight is a feature that takes a look at the volunteers who are involved with ACE and whose efforts make the work that we do possible.
In the second edition of this feature we spoke to Emily Bedson and asked her about her involvement with ACE. Emily is a volunteer tutor at ACE’s Learning Club on both Thursdays and Saturday.
I had seen the advertisement for ACE Cardiff on VolunteerWales a year prior to becoming involved. However, my degree was in its final stages and I wanted to finish it before committing myself to anything else. After finishing my degree I wasn’t sure what I wanted to as a career and I remembered ACE and thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to explore an alternative career path.
You have been volunteering with the Learning Club for 6 months. How are you getting on? What is the most interesting part?
The Learning Club is absolutely fantastic and I am really enjoying tutoring and being a tutor assistant. It is wonderful to see the students’ progress and to be a part of that progression. My role as a tutor assistant is a great way in which to get ideas for my own lessons with regard to classroom management. I love being able to conduct practical science lessons, it is so much fun and hopefully the students think so too. So far we have dissected a heart and identified important parts and learnt about their functions next we will be building our own lung (fake I should mention).
Why is working with young people important to you?
The young people who attend ACE Learning Club are so enthusiastic about their education, which makes tutoring them an absolute pleasure.
What role does volunteering play in your life?
It is a fantastic chance to gain some excellent experience and again it provides opportunities to explore career options for people who are unsure what they would like to do.
Anything else that you’d like to mention about ACE?
This is a wonderful organisation and I would like to thank Gerry and Becky for all of the help and support they have given me.
Do you have any interesting hobbies?
In my spare time I enjoy decorating cakes and knitting.
